CASE STUDIES IN TX ROOM DESIGN

TREATMENT ROOM DESIGN

I’ve been developing a course for the Oregon School of Massage on treatment room design. This feels like a natural bridge between my former career as a massage therapist, and my current one as a designer. I have an insider perspective on the needs of these spaces, and how to improve their form and function to support overall client outcomes for the better.

CASE STUDY 1

Sam was my PT, and a very excellent practitioner. He graciously agreed to let me boss his space around, even though the clinic is in transition to a new location, and the changes would be temporary. I treated this like a consultation, offering suggestions for consideration, as well as a mock-up of what the space could look like fully remodeled. He was able to make some of the changes, and although we didn’t get after pics before the space transitioned, the owners said it looked much better. Thanks to this opportunity, I’m now creating a furniture plan for the new clinic location!

“This is very helpful, thank you for putting all this information together! I am going to start making small tweaks in my down time and I think that things will be a lot nicer and more patient-friendly without a ton of extra resources. I really appreciate your eye for design and for your perspective as a patient having used this space.”

CASE STUDY 2

Mary is an LMT who I’ve known for about seven years. She recently had the opportunity to get her own treatment room, and we collaborated on the design. The basement treatment room was wood-paneled, had some awkward structural elements, and felt a bit oppressive. There was a nice window where she could use natural daylighting and plants to offer a bit of connection to the outside, and the space had a lot of potential. The owners put in a sink, which is always a huge benefit in a treatment room. Here are the suggestions I made, and the final result! She did a wonderful job incorporating my ideas with her own.

Here is a sneak peek at the design critique portion of the upcoming class on January 30, 2023 at the Portland campus of OSM. From most problematic, to most dreamy spa settings, enjoy the journey! ;)
